What Is Xeriscaping?
Xeriscaping is a landscaping approach built around using less water outdoors. It relies on smart plant selection, efficient irrigation, better soil prep, and mulch working together. Locally, that usually means swapping thirsty turf for desert adapted species and low use materials suited to your property's sun and drainage. A well planned setup still has real variety, shade, and color, it just survives here on far less supplemental supply once established.
Why Local Homeowners Are Making the Switch
Scottsdale's intense summer heat puts heavy stress on traditional turf. It drives up outdoor watering needs for months at a time. Keeping a lawn green through that stretch means near constant watering, and the utility bill reflects it every July and August. The ground underneath does not help either. A lot of local lots sit on caliche, a hard, cement like layer that forms naturally in southern Arizona soils. According to the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, this layer can restrict root growth and block moisture from draining properly. That is part of why grass and shallow rooted greenery struggle here even with steady watering. It is one reason plant selection and proper planting depth matter so much on properties across this city. The city also has water efficient landscaping requirements that can affect what is allowed on newer residential properties. For a lot of new construction, this approach is already close to the expectation rather than an optional upgrade. Once specimens are established, the ongoing work drops significantly too. A xeriscape needs occasional pruning and a periodic drip check, not a weekly mow.
Is Xeriscaping the Same as Desert Landscaping?
Not exactly, though the two terms overlap in everyday conversation. Xeriscaping refers specifically to a moisture saving method covering planning, plant choice, irrigation, and upkeep. Desert landscaping is a broader style term describing a yard built around desert adapted greenery and materials like decomposed granite and boulders. Most desert landscaping projects here follow the same low moisture principles anyway.
What This Costs
A small planting bed conversion in Scottsdale typically starts in the low thousands. A full front and back overhaul with mature trees and a complete drip system runs well beyond that. The exact number depends on square footage, how much existing sod needs to come out, specimen size, irrigation changes, ground prep, and drainage work. Breaking through a thick caliche layer adds real cost too, since that work is slower and more physical than digging through ordinary ground. We walk the property and give you a written number before any work starts, since ground conditions genuinely differ block to block in this city.
The Scottsdale Water Rebate Program
Scottsdale Water's residential grass removal rebate has offered up to $5,000 per property, at a rate of $2 per square foot removed, though this program runs in seasons and the amount is not guaranteed to stay the same. The residential rebate is currently closed for this cycle. The city requires a pre inspection and a Notice to Proceed before any removal begins, and work done ahead of that approval is not eligible for a rebate.
Our Process
1:Property walk
We check sun exposure, existing drainage, irrigation coverage, and signs of caliche before finalizing the scope of work.
2:Plan and species list
You get a written layout with plant placement and a materials list. The price can be broken into phases if you want to split the project.
3:Ground prep and removal
Old turf comes out. Any caliche in the planting zones gets broken up so roots have room to spread properly.
4:Planting and drip install
Plants go in first, then drip lines are zoned by species so nothing ends up over or under watered.
5:Final walkthrough
You get a walkthrough of the finished work and basic care notes for the first few months while everything takes root
Most yards making this switch already have a working sprinkler system in place. We typically reuse the existing main lines and valves. Then we convert the heads to properly sized drip emitters, which keeps cost down compared to a full rebuild. If your current setup needs repair first, our irrigation team handles that separately before the conversion begins.
